What is Pressure Gauge?
Pressure gauge is a measuring device that measures the state of a gas or liquid. Generally, the pressure is measured in units of force per unit of surface area. With the help of pressure gauge, we can monitor the pressure level of water in a water or pressure tank, in gas stations, this mechanical instrument is used to check tires and to check blood our pressure, a pressure gauge is needed.Components of Pressure gauge
The basic components of pressure gauge are
Case: Case usually holds and keeps secure the internal moving parts of the pressure gauge. The case can be made from various materials and its’ configuration also varies according to the places application.
Bourdon Tube: It is the main pressure detecting part or sensing element of the pressure gauge. When the pressure is applied it starts to flex and transmit the wave to the pointer. Brass and bronze are the common materials of the bourdon tube.
Linkage: It helps to connect the bourdon tube and the gear mechanism.
Gear: The mechanism which receives the movement of bourdon tube and linkage is known as gear mechanism. Gear mechanism controls the motion of pointer too.
Pointer: The pointer reads the measurements. It uses to indicate the value gradations on the dial face. So, when we measure pressure we can see a moving part, which is called pointer.
Dial: The white dial face presents the ranges of pressure measurements with the needle. It may show different units of pressure.
Window: Window works as a visual display to observe the measurement. It can be made from clear plastic, clear glass, laminated glass. It helps to protect the pointer and dial face of the pressure gauge.
Ring: Basically ring hold the window in a particular place. The shapes of ring depends on the type of the case include threaded, crimped, bayonet and so on.
How does Pressure Gauge works
Generally, bourdon tube pressure gauges are popular everywhere. It is c-shaped and has an ellipsoidal section. It remains connected with a hollow end to a fixed pipe containing the fluid. A fluid or media which enters in the bourdon tube through the pipe can be any pressurized gas or liquid. The media tends to enlarge the tube. By the tube travel the pressure transmitted via a mechanical movement to the pointer. The pointer then starts to rotate and indicates the pressure. We can notice the result or reading on the scale. Different pressure can be also possible to measure by pressure gauges which have two distinct bourdon tubes with linkages.
There are various kinds of advantages of a bourdon tube pressure gauge.
Some of the reasons for its’ popularity are-
– It is versatile, inexpensive and may be used in most applications.
– Bourdon tube is simple in construction and easier to make.
– It covers very small pressure ranges up to very high-pressure ranges accurately.
– If the bourdon tube is modified it can provide electrical outputs too.
– It may be soldered, welded or screwed with the pressurized components but it depends on the material and pressure loads.
